“Il cinico sta allo scettico come l’ateo sta all’agnostico” (Roberto Gervaso)

diogene

Tutti i valori tradizionali venivano distrutti, insieme all’esigenza di apparire.

I cinici disprezzano l’”altro” indistintamente.

Vi era in me troppo entusiasmo per sguazzare in quelle lordure dell’intelligenza.

CYNISM

A couple of words about this word.

“Cynicism is the art of seeing things as they are, not as they should be” O. Wilde.

Lately there are statements that resound in every conversation I hear or read.

“My country would be the best country in the world if the where not those people to live there and those who manage it”

“The problem is not Italy, are Italians”

“I have lost confidence in the world by observing the people in it”

I am surrounded by people who give off a disarming negativity towards others. I am surrounded by completely different situations enclosed in a single definition. I am surrounded by cynics who call them self like this and other cynics that are proud to use this noun to label the world’s population.

“Cynicism” is a word that is used and abused these days. Many people argue that it is indeed the key word of the historical phase we are experiencing.

The attorney general of the court of appeals Giovanni Salvi has used it to determine the reason of the crisis of Italian justice. Someone approach the term referred to the “rhetoric” and say that journalism and the judiciary only live with this. I’ve heard about terrorism and even when we had the controversy over the cartoons of Charlie Hebdo. From what I hear and read I can say is a cynic person who write about crime and who comment this news, it is those who want the revolution and who does not cares, it is who is a pessimist, a realist, who stay on a right-wing parties, those in the left part, men who hate politics and even women with the period.

I wondered if I am, too. Probably I’m becoming.

“The cynic is skeptical of how the atheist is at the agnostic”- Roberto Gervaso

The cynics are born in the fourth century BC and they are the followers of the school founded by Antisthenes and Diogenes of Sinope; This name comes from the Greek word “Kynikos” (in the manner of the dog), which is in turn from “Kyos” (dog) and that is the nickname given right to Diogenes. Probably this term was initially ascribed to them by others in a derogatory sense, to indicate their habit to live a life on the street, wandering and independent, just like these animals. Cynics will give to this word a positive meaning later, proud of their choices.

These philosophers were work towards to freedom understood as Well Soul Supreme and only accessible by self-sufficiency. To be a perfect cynic you should not be afraid of hunger, cold, loneliness. You do not wish you had money, power, sex: the physical and emotional needs had to be put aside to make room for something bigger and essential. All traditional values were destroyed, together with the need to appear. Among the most recent figures that recall this unkempt style, there are hippies, the punkies and the so-called homeless, educated bums.

Analyzing that from which it originated throughout the rampant today negativity and hostility towards others, emerge many elements unexpectedly curious and fun of this popular philosophy. Antisthenes spoke about wealth as something that can not be material, because there are too many people who, although full of objects and money, risking their lives and struggling a lot just to obtain more things without ever being happy. He, however, was fasting for two days before eating something, so to enjoy and appreciate the food at best. And when he had to go to bed with a woman he was choosing an ugly one that nobody wanted, so she welcome him with more joy than any other.

Probably it was he, Antisthenes, to invent the first sleeping bag ever: to fully live this lifestyle with the bare minimum, he doubled his cape, and often he was sleeping just rolling up that on himself. When Diogenes met Antisthenes for the first time, he told him immediately that would become his disciple. Initially, the teacher showed himself happy, but when he realized that the boy was following him everywhere, invading his spaces, he tried to pull him away with a stick. The attempt failed, of course.

Diogenes was use to diminish the power. One of the anecdotes that best express this, speak about his meeting with Alexander the Great: the boy was sitting on the stairs to enjoy the sun when the King stopped in front of him and said, “I am Alexander the Great, you can ask me anything you want , I will give it to you “and Diogenes replied,” okay, I ask you to move because you cover me the sun ”

He was refusing what was not absolutely necessary. He had almost nothing as material objects: he only used his coat in summer and in winter too. He was eating in a basin and drinking using a bowl; one morning, however, he saw a boy eating by placing the food directly on the bread and drinking using the hollow of his hand, and he threw away both the basin and the bowl.

One day, even, being in a house full of very expensive items, he spat in the face of the owner  and then apologized, saying he had not found a bad corner throughout the home in which to spit.

About the needs and physical pleasures, he masturbated only because it was more dismissive and often he did it in public without being issues, saying it would be nice to be able to feed himself even just rubbing the stomach.

He did not esteem the other people: once someone saw him talking to a statue and he explained that he was training how to speak in vain.

Cynics who followed this school subsequently tried to keep up the extreme style of life of the previous people.

“The cynicism kills as much as machine guns, rifles and knives” Marco Tarquinio

Today, cynism, means a general distrust and a lack of faith to humans in general or to ambitious people, motivated by materialism or desire, things thought impossible or meaningless by the followers of this philosophy.

Any statement or reaction of those who live cynically probably has a plausible and understandable justification or excuse, but I think this is not enough to justify a constant attitude: it is easier to get someone to lose hope that get it and, unfortunately, with most of the population, it is also too easy.

The negative stimulus that surrounds the community is a boost to the selfishness and meanness reactions: in the face of so many problems to deal with, many of them serious, it’s easy to fall into exaggerated attitudes, especially by those who have not learned to control the irrational part of themselves.

“The cynicism knows the price of everything and the value of nothing”

Cynics despise the others without distinction. They argue that every human is unreliable and useless, but this generalization inevitably leads to a revenge that seems not smart: if we do not trust the people of the world, we should not trust also ourselves, being part of this group.

But cynics, as you might think, are not stupid.

They show confusion, bewilderment, distrust, disapproval, contradiction, loneliness, but not stupidity: Dr. House, Sherlock Holmes, are modern cynics and we just need to think only an instant to them to be in agreement with this.

Flaunt their superiority by denigrating others, but they think, reason and have experience.

Those who live in a superficial way, those who are not interested in the world, what happens to those around them, will never be a cynic: it is necessary to stop and reflect on the joy, the pain, the events, to lose hope and start living with this common lifestyle.

Those who have no maturity and has not had to face difficulties, problems, moments of discomfort or treason, naively think of living in a world of joys, but only after having tasted the bitterness of disappointment on their skin may develop a negative thought of this type.

“The doctrine of the cynics is the Ideal reversed, the parody of physical and moral beauty, the crime of mind, the degradation of imagination. I could not take pleasure in it. There was too much enthusiasm within me to permit me to crawl through those sinks of the brain. My nature had wings. The dangers to which I was exposed were above, not below. ”  – Alphonse De Lamartine

What scares me and it saddens me most of what I hear every day is therefore the awareness of having confidence in people who do not think and do not have the ability to do something  and be opposed by people who would rather the ability to change the world, but voluntarily decide to use the energies in the opposite direction.

Those who are criticized are individuals who are drag by others and those who criticize are the involuntary guides of the latter, heavy in every statement, but immersed in the lightweight when it comes to responsibility.

This creates a vicious cycle of wasted minds and bodies. And redundant news. And mutual polemics. And expectations. And cartoons, words, phrases they would like to bring up the irony of the Greek philosophers, they would like to talk about reality, they would be called satire, but only leave a trail of bitterness, only leave a perfect representation of a cynicism that now, should go out of fashion.
